Elham Aesthetic Art provides medical facials in North York, Ontario, for clients across Toronto, Vaughan and Thornhill. Every facial is planned by Elham Mousavi, an aesthetic medicine specialist with more than 26 years of clinical experience, after your skin is assessed in person — so the treatment matches your skin rather than a fixed menu.
What is a medical facial?
A medical facial is a professional skin treatment carried out in a clinical setting, planned around an assessment of your skin by a trained practitioner. It combines cleansing and exfoliation with treatment steps chosen for a specific concern — congestion, dullness, texture, pigmentation or early ageing — rather than following one routine for every client.
The difference from a spa facial is not intensity for its own sake. It is that the treatment is chosen after someone has looked properly at your skin, asked what you already use on it, and taken account of anything that changes how your skin will respond — recent sun exposure, active acne, retinoid use, or a treatment you had somewhere else last month. That assessment is the part that makes a facial worth booking.
Medical facials compared with spa facials
Both have a place. This is the honest version, including when a spa facial is the more sensible choice.
| Medical facial | Spa facial | |
|---|---|---|
| Planned by | An aesthetic medicine practitioner, after assessing your skin | An esthetician, usually from a set menu |
| Main goal | Change a specific skin concern over a course of sessions | Cleanse, hydrate and relax on the day |
| Assessment first | Yes — including medications, products and recent treatments | Brief or none |
| Can be combined with | Microneedling, RF, injectables, in a planned sequence | Generally standalone |
| Typical downtime | None to mild redness for a few hours | None |
| Choose it when | You want a measurable change in texture, congestion or tone | You want maintenance and an hour of calm |
Hydrodermabrasion and aqua facials at our North York clinic
Hydrodermabrasion is a water-based resurfacing facial. A handpiece delivers a controlled stream of solution to the skin while gently drawing away dead surface cells and the contents of congested pores at the same time. Because the exfoliation happens in liquid rather than by abrasion, it suits sensitive and reactive skin better than a dry mechanical scrub, and there is normally no downtime.
It is a reasonable first treatment if your main complaints are dullness, rough texture, blackheads or makeup that never quite sits right — and it is a useful way to see how your skin behaves before committing to a longer course of anything more involved.
A note on naming, because it matters. Our clinic uses a hydrodermabrasion device. We do not operate the branded HydraFacial® system, and we do not describe our treatment as a HydraFacial. The technique belongs to the same family of water-based resurfacing; the trademarked machine is a different product. If you have had a HydraFacial elsewhere and liked it, tell us at your consultation and we will be straightforward about what our device does and does not replicate.
Our facial menu: the treatments we offer
Every facial here begins with a skin assessment, and the protocol is built around what your skin is doing on the day rather than around a fixed package. These are the facials we perform. They can be combined, and some of them work better as a short course than as a single visit.
Deep-cleansing facial with extractions
For congested skin, blackheads and pores that look enlarged. Cleansing and softening, manual extraction of blocked pores, then a calming mask. This is usually the right starting point when skin feels rough and looks congested rather than dry.
Hydrating facial
For skin that feels tight, looks flat or flakes — common after a Toronto winter, or after a course of strong active skincare. Layered hydrating and barrier-repair products with no aggressive exfoliation, so it is safe on skin that has become sensitised.
Brightening facial
For uneven tone, dullness and the brown marks left behind by old breakouts. The brightening actives are chosen for your skin type. Pigmentation with a deeper cause, such as melasma, is assessed first — a facial on its own is rarely the whole answer there.
Anti-aging facial
For fine lines, dryness and skin that has lost its firmness and its glow. It works on skin quality: hydration, circulation and barrier support. It is not a substitute for treatments that address volume or laxity — if that is what you are actually looking at, we will say so and talk you through RF fractional or thread lifts instead.
Oxygen facial
A stream of oxygen is used to press serums into the surface of the skin. It is comfortable, there is no downtime, and the finish is immediate — which is why it is most often booked in the days before a wedding, a shoot or an event.
Anti-acne facial
For skin that is actively breaking out. Deep cleansing, careful extraction where it is appropriate, and calming, anti-bacterial actives — normally as a short course rather than a single visit. Persistent or cystic acne needs a medical plan rather than facials alone, and marks that have already turned into acne scarring are a separate treatment.
Chemical peel
A controlled exfoliation using a professional-grade acid solution. The type of acid and its strength are chosen after a skin assessment — lighter peels for tone and texture, stronger ones for stubborn pigmentation and rough skin. Expect some flaking for a few days afterwards, and strict sun protection while the skin recovers.
Body facial (back, chest and shoulders)
The same protocol taken to the areas that break out but almost never get treated. Cleansing, exfoliation, extraction where it is needed and a mask, adjusted for skin that is thicker and more congested than the skin on the face. Often booked before a wedding or a holiday.
Hydrodermabrasion (aqua facial)
The water-based resurfacing facial described above, performed on our hydrodermabrasion device. A sensible first treatment when the complaint is dullness, rough texture or blackheads, and a comfortable option for reactive skin.
All of these are performed with professional clinic equipment rather than by hand alone, and each one is adjusted to your skin type, your history and how your skin has responded to treatment before. Which facial is right for you — and how many sessions, if any — is confirmed at your consultation.
Which facial treatment suits your skin concern?
A facial is often the right starting point, and sometimes it is not the treatment that will actually solve the problem. Where something else fits better, we will say so at the consultation rather than sell you a course of facials. This is roughly how concerns map:
| What is bothering you | Usual starting point | Often combined with |
|---|---|---|
| Dull, tired-looking skin | Brightening or hydrodermabrasion facial | Skin boosters |
| Congestion and blackheads | Deep-cleansing facial with extractions | A review of your home routine |
| Rough or uneven texture | Chemical peel, or a facial first if the skin is reactive | Microneedling |
| Fine lines and early laxity | Anti-aging facial, for skin quality only | RF fractional |
| Active breakouts | Anti-acne facial, as a short course | A review of your home routine |
| Breakouts on the back, chest or shoulders | Body facial | A review of your home routine |
| Acne scarring | Assessment first — a facial alone will not resolve it | Acne scar treatment |
| Dehydration and loss of glow | Hydrating facial, plus a hydration-focused treatment | Mesotherapy |
| General skin quality, no single concern | A facial on a maintenance interval | PRF / PRP |
What does a facial appointment involve?
A first facial appointment runs about an hour, and roughly the first ten minutes of it are assessment rather than treatment. Your skin is cleansed and examined, you are asked what you currently use and what you have had done recently, and the treatment steps are then chosen. Most clients find the treatment itself relaxing; nothing about it should be painful.
Before your appointment
- Come with clean skin if you can, or simply without makeup
- Pause retinoids and strong exfoliating acids for about three days beforehand
- Avoid sunburn and fresh tanning in the week before
- Tell us about any recent injectable, laser or peel treatment, and when it was
- Mention any prescription skin medication, including isotretinoin, current or recent
After your appointment
- Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily — freshly exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive
- Leave saunas, steam rooms and hard workouts for 24 hours
- Keep the routine simple for two days: cleanse, moisturise, protect
- Reintroduce retinoids and acids after about three days, not immediately
- Mild redness for a few hours is expected; anything lasting past a day is worth a call
How often should you have a facial?
For most skin, every four to six weeks is the useful interval. That roughly follows the skin’s natural renewal cycle, so each session works on newly surfaced skin rather than repeating work already done. Congestion-focused courses sometimes start closer together — every two to three weeks for the first few — then settle to maintenance.
More often is not better. Over-exfoliated skin becomes sensitised, reddened and paradoxically dull, which is the opposite of the goal. If your skin is reacting, the right answer is usually to lengthen the interval, not to add treatments.
Facials for clients in North York, Vaughan and Toronto
The clinic is at 200 Finch Ave W, Unit 221, in North York, with easy access from Yonge Street and Highway 401. Clients travel to us from across Toronto, Vaughan and Thornhill, and a first facial appointment is usually straightforward to schedule within the same week.
If you are comparing clinics for a facial in North York, the questions worth asking anywhere are the same three: who assesses your skin before the treatment is chosen, what device is actually being used, and what the plan is if the first session does not achieve much. We are happy to answer all three before you book anything.
Why have a facial at a medical clinic
Facials are low-risk, which is exactly why the assessment matters: the risk is not usually harm, it is spending months on the wrong treatment. Booking into a medical aesthetics clinic means the person planning your facial can also tell you when a facial is not the answer, and can plan the treatment that is — without sending you somewhere else to start over.
It also matters for skin that is not straightforward. Reactive skin, melasma, rosacea-prone skin, skin on prescription acne medication and richly pigmented skin all respond differently to exfoliation, and all benefit from someone who assesses before treating rather than after.
