HIFU
Lift, tighten, and rejuvenate skin naturally without surgery or downtime
HIFU in Toronto, at our North York clinic. HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is a non-surgical skin-tightening treatment. It focuses ultrasound energy at set depths beneath the skin, where it gently heats the tissue that holds the face up and prompts the body to build new collagen. Nothing is cut and no needles are used.
At Elham Aesthetic Art, on Finch Avenue West in North York, HIFU is planned and performed by Elham Mousavi, Aesthetic Medicine Specialist (IMG), who has more than 26 years of aesthetic-medicine practice. Many clients see a noticeable result after one session. Some tightening can show straight away, and the result keeps building for two to three months as new collagen forms. Most people return to their day immediately afterwards.
We see clients from across Toronto, North York, Vaughan, Thornhill and Richmond Hill. New clients receive 10% off their first visit.
What HIFU is and how it works
An ultrasound handpiece is passed over the treatment area in a planned pattern. At each point it delivers a short pulse that is focused below the surface, so the outer skin is left intact while small zones underneath reach roughly 60–70 °C. Those zones contract slightly, which is why some tightening can be visible on the day, and they set off a repair response in which the body lays down new collagen and elastin over the following weeks. That repair is where most of the result comes from, and it is why HIFU looks gradual and natural rather than sudden.
What sets HIFU apart from most non-surgical treatments is depth. Lasers, peels and radiofrequency mainly work in the skin itself. HIFU can also reach the SMAS, the fibrous layer beneath the skin and fat that a surgical facelift lifts and tightens. A 2019 clinical study of 50 patients published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open treated the mid and lower face at exactly these depths and followed patients for a year (read the study).
| Depth below the skin | Layer reached | What the energy does there |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 mm | Upper dermis | Refines texture and fine lines |
| 3.0 mm | Deep dermis | Firms the skin and stimulates new collagen and elastin |
| 4.5 mm | SMAS (the muscular layer a surgical facelift tightens) | Contracts and lifts the supporting tissue of the lower face and jawline |
Your treatment is mapped to your face at the consultation: which depths are used, over which areas, and how many passes. Thinner areas such as the neck and the skin around the eyes are treated more conservatively than the cheeks and jawline.
HIFU Toronto: the areas we treat
HIFU is used on the face and on a few areas of the body where skin has started to loosen. At our clinic it is most often requested for the lower face, where a softening jawline and early jowls are the first signs of laxity many people notice.
Several areas can be treated in the same visit. Which ones are worth treating, and which would be better served by another treatment, is decided at your consultation.
HIFU treatment in Toronto: what a session involves
A HIFU appointment is straightforward, and there is no recovery period to plan around. This is what to expect from start to finish.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Consultation | Your skin, your concerns and your medical history are reviewed. We explain what HIFU can and cannot achieve for you, and whether another treatment would suit you better. |
| Preparation | The area is cleansed, treatment lines are mapped on the skin, and a thin layer of ultrasound gel is applied. |
| Treatment | The handpiece is moved across each area in a planned pattern. Our device is designed for comfort, and most clients describe the session as relaxing, with little discomfort. |
| Straight after | You can go back to work or your day. Mild redness or tenderness, if any, settles on its own. |
| Weeks 1–12 | New collagen forms and the skin firms gradually. Most of the improvement appears over two to three months. |
| Follow-up | Many clients are happy after one session. Others add a further session, and we advise on timing based on how your skin responds. |
How long HIFU results last
The collagen HIFU prompts your body to build is your own tissue, so the improvement does not wear off the way a filler is absorbed. What continues is ordinary ageing: the skin keeps losing collagen at its natural rate from the new, firmer starting point. The 2019 study above followed patients for a full year after treatment. Many clients choose to plan a maintenance session once their skin begins to soften again, and we will advise on timing at your follow-up rather than booking you into a fixed schedule.
HIFU compared with other lifting and tightening treatments
HIFU tightens; it does not add volume and it does not relax muscles. That makes it a different tool from injectables, and it often works best alongside them rather than instead of them. This is how it compares with the other treatments we offer for an ageing lower face.
| Treatment | What it works on | Needles | When results show |
|---|---|---|---|
| HIFU | Loose skin and the deeper supporting layer (SMAS) | No | Gradually, over 2–3 months |
| Thread lift | Lifts sagging tissue mechanically and stimulates collagen | Yes, fine cannulas | Lift is visible straight away, then improves |
| RF microneedling | Skin texture, scarring, pores and firmness | Yes, microneedles | Over several weeks, usually as a course |
| Sculptra and Radiesse | Lost volume and skin quality, through collagen stimulation | Yes, injections | Gradually, over a series of sessions |
| Botox | Expression lines caused by muscle movement | Yes, fine injections | Within about two weeks |
If your main concern is lost volume in the cheeks or temples, a biostimulator or filler is usually the better first step. If it is loose skin along the jawline and neck, HIFU or a thread lift is. We will tell you honestly which approach fits what we see at your consultation.
Who HIFU suits — and who it does not
HIFU gives the best results when it is matched to the right problem. It is a refinement for mild to moderate laxity, not a replacement for surgery.
A good fit if you
Treatment is deferred or declined if you
Before your appointment
Arrive with clean skin and no make-up on the area being treated. Let us know about any filler, threads or Botox in the past few months, any medication you take, and any history of cold sores, so the plan can be adjusted. There is nothing else you need to do in advance.
After your appointment
Mild redness, swelling, tingling or tenderness can last from a few hours to a few days. Avoid intense heat, such as saunas, hot yoga and very hot showers, for 48 hours. Use gentle skincare and a daily SPF. Rarely, a small bruise or a patch of temporary numbness appears; it settles on its own, but call us if anything concerns you.
Real results, real confidence
These are clients of the clinic, photographed before HIFU and again once their result had developed. Results vary from person to person.
What HIFU costs in Toronto
The cost of HIFU depends on how many areas are treated and how many passes your plan needs, so it is confirmed at your consultation rather than quoted as a flat price. You will know the full cost before anything is done. New clients receive 10% off their first visit.
