Elham Aesthetic Art provides medical laser hair removal in North York, Ontario, for clients across Toronto, Vaughan and Thornhill. Treatments are planned and performed by Elham Mousavi, an aesthetic medicine specialist with more than 26 years of clinical experience, and every session is matched to your skin tone and hair type before the first pulse.
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a non-invasive treatment that uses a focused beam of light to heat and disable the hair follicle at its root. The pigment in the hair absorbs the light and converts it to heat, damaging the follicle so it produces finer hair, or none at all. Health authorities describe the result as permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal.
The principle behind it is called selective photothermolysis: the laser is tuned so that the melanin in the hair absorbs far more energy than the surrounding skin, which is what allows the follicle to be treated without burning the tissue around it. It is the same principle that makes correct settings so important, and why an assessment before treatment is not a formality.
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Most clients need a course of roughly six to eight sessions to reach their target result, spaced four to six weeks apart on the face and six to eight weeks apart on the body. Hair grows in cycles, and a laser can only disable a follicle while it is in its active growth phase. Spacing exists to catch each follicle in that phase.
That is why a single session never clears an area permanently, and why any clinic promising results in one or two visits is describing something other than how hair biology works. The figures below are typical planning ranges; your own plan is set at consultation.
| Treatment area | Typical course | Interval between sessions | Session length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper lip, chin | 6 to 8 sessions | 4 to 6 weeks | Under 15 minutes |
| Underarms | 6 to 8 sessions | 6 to 8 weeks | Around 15 minutes |
| Bikini or Brazilian | 6 to 8 sessions | 6 to 8 weeks | 20 to 30 minutes |
| Full legs | 6 to 8 sessions | 6 to 8 weeks | 45 to 60 minutes |
| Back or chest | 6 to 8 sessions | 6 to 8 weeks | 30 to 45 minutes |
Hormonal factors, medication and hair colour all affect how many sessions an individual needs. Grey, white and very fine blonde hair contains little pigment for the laser to target and responds poorly. That is a limitation of the technology, not of a particular clinic.
Does laser hair removal work on darker skin tones?
Yes, but the wavelength matters more than anything else in the room. Darker skin holds more melanin in the surrounding tissue, so a laser tuned for pale skin can heat the skin as readily as the hair. Longer wavelengths pass deeper and are absorbed less by surface pigment, which is what makes treating richly pigmented skin safe rather than risky.
This is the single most useful question to ask any clinic before booking, anywhere. A practitioner who cannot tell you which wavelength they are using on your skin type, or who offers the same settings to every client, is the reason laser hair removal has a reputation for burns and post-inflammatory pigmentation among people with deeper skin tones.
At Elham Aesthetic Art, skin type is assessed on the Fitzpatrick scale at consultation and settings are chosen from that assessment, with a patch test before a full first session. If your skin type is not a good match for the equipment available, you will be told so directly rather than sold a course.
Areas we treat
Laser hair removal is offered for women and men, on the face and body, in single areas or combined packages.
What does a session feel like, and is there downtime?
Most people describe each pulse as a brief snap of heat, similar to an elastic band against the skin, and return to normal activity the same day. The treated area is usually pink and slightly warm for a few hours, occasionally up to a day. There is no bandaging, no recovery period and no time off work.
Shed hair continues to work its way out of the follicle for one to three weeks after a session, which can look like regrowth. It is not. Do not wax or pluck during that window; shaving is fine.
Before your appointment
- Shave the area 24 hours before. The laser targets the follicle, not hair above the skin
- Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for two weeks beforehand
- Do not wax, pluck or thread for four weeks beforehand
- Arrive with clean skin, free of lotion, oil and deodorant
- Tell us about any medication that increases light sensitivity
After your appointment
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to any treated area that sees daylight
- Avoid saunas, hot tubs and intense workouts for 24 to 48 hours
- Skip exfoliants and retinoids on the area for several days
- Keep shaving between sessions if you want to; just do not wax or pluck
- Contact the clinic if redness lasts beyond a day or blistering appears
Laser hair removal compared with waxing, shaving and electrolysis
Each method solves a different problem. This is the honest version, including where laser is the wrong choice.
| Method | How long results last | Works on grey or fine blonde hair | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laser | Long-term reduction after a full course, with occasional maintenance | No; it needs pigment in the hair | Larger areas and pigmented hair, when you want to stop maintaining them |
| Waxing | Three to six weeks | Yes | Short-term smoothness; no long-term change |
| Shaving | One to three days | Yes | Immediate, free, endless |
| Electrolysis | Permanent, follicle by follicle | Yes | Small areas, and hair with no pigment for a laser to find |
Why have laser hair removal at a medical clinic
Laser hair removal is widely available in Toronto at salons and spas as well as clinics. The difference is who assesses you and who decides the settings.
Elham Aesthetic Art is led by Elham Mousavi, an aesthetic medicine specialist with over 26 years of practice across Iran and Toronto. Consultations cover skin type, hair type, medication and medical history before any plan is proposed, and a patch test precedes a first full session. If laser is not the right answer for your hair or skin, the consultation says so.
The clinic is at 200 Finch Ave W, Unit 221 in North York, open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and closed Sundays, within easy reach of Toronto, Vaughan and Thornhill.
